1.What data we collect
We collect only the data we need to run a news platform and communicate with you. We do not sell your personal data to any third party.
The categories of personal data we may collect include:
- Account data — name and email address when you subscribe to our newsletter, submit a correction request, or contact us through the form on this site.
- Reading data — which articles you read, for how long, and from which referring URL. This is collected via privacy-preserving analytics (no third-party tracking cookies by default).
- Device data — IP address (truncated and anonymised), browser type, screen size, and approximate region (state-level only for India).
- Communication data — the contents of any message you send to us through our contact form or by email.
- Cookie data — see the “Cookies” section below.
We do not collect: Aadhaar numbers, PAN, banking details (we do not process payments directly on this site), caste, religion, biometric data, or precise geolocation.
2.How we use your data
We use your personal data to:
- Deliver the newsletter and editorial newsletters you signed up for.
- Respond to messages you send us through the contact or corrections forms.
- Understand which stories are being read, so we can improve our journalism and our website. Aggregate, anonymised analytics may be shared with our advertising partners, but never individual reader data.
- Detect and prevent abuse — including spam, scraping, and coordinated inauthentic behaviour on our comment sections or forms.
- Comply with our legal obligations under Indian law, including responding to lawful requests from competent authorities.
We rely on the legal basis of consent (for newsletters, non-essential cookies, and contact form submissions) and legitimate interest (for security, fraud prevention, and internal analytics) under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act).
3.Third-party services
Some features of mvnews.in depend on third-party services. Each service operates under its own privacy policy. We have selected services that publish a privacy-respecting stance, but you should review their policies directly.
- Cloudinary — hosts our article images and candidate photographs. No personal data of yours is shared with Cloudinary unless you upload an image to our servers (e.g. for a reader photo contest).
- YouTube — embeds videos on our video pages and within articles. YouTube sets cookies on the page where a video is embedded. You can review YouTube's privacy policy at policies.google.com/privacy.
- Google Fonts — serves the Playfair Display, DM Sans, Source Serif 4, and Noto Sans Tamil typefaces. Google Fonts receives your IP address when fonts are requested. We self-host fonts wherever possible to minimise this.
- Email service provider — sends the newsletter on our behalf. Your email address is shared with this provider only for the purpose of delivering the newsletter.
We do not use third-party advertising networks that build cross-site browsing profiles of individual users. Display advertising on MV News is contextual, not behavioural.
5.Your rights
Under the Information Technology Act, 2000 (and the Reasonable Security Practices and Procedures Rules, 2011) and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act), you have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correction — ask us to fix inaccurate or incomplete personal data.
- Deletion — ask us to erase your personal data (“the right to be forgotten”) where we have no overriding legal basis to retain it.
- Withdraw consent — at any time, for any processing that relies on your consent (e.g. newsletters, non-essential cookies). Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal.
- Grievance — file a complaint with our Grievance Officer (see contact details below) and, if not resolved, with the Data Protection Board of India.
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@mvnews.in with the subject line “Data Rights Request”. We will respond within 30 days, free of charge.
6.Data retention
We retain personal data only as long as necessary for the purpose for which it was collected:
- Newsletter subscriber data — until you unsubscribe.
- Contact and corrections form submissions — 24 months.
- Server access logs (including IP address) — 90 days.
- Comments and reader submissions — until you request deletion, subject to our editorial archive obligations.
Where we are required by law (e.g. tax records, court orders) to retain data for longer, we will do so in a segregated, access- controlled store.
7.Security
MV News follows the reasonable security practices and procedures mandated under Section 43A of the IT Act, 2000 and the DPDP Rules. Personal data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256). Access to production databases is restricted to named individuals, logged, and reviewed monthly.
In the event of a personal data breach affecting your rights, we will notify you and the Data Protection Board of India within 72 hours of becoming aware of the breach, in accordance with Section 8 of the DPDP Act.
8.Children's data
MV News is a general-interest political news platform and is not directed at children under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact privacy@mvnews.in and we will erase it promptly.
